About
Seeing medical illustrator as the top choice on her high school career placement test introduced the field of medical illustration to Amanda Barnaby. Realizing that art could help others understand a scientific concept, mechanism, or procedure appealed to her. Born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, she attended Kendall College of Art and Design in concurrence with taking sciences classes at Michigan State University. She then went on to obtain a Master of Science in Medical Illustration from Augusta University, one of three accredited graduate programs in the country.
In her spare time, Amanda enjoys biking, hiking, and enjoying the outdoors with her dog, Gingerbread.

What is Medical Illustration?
Medical illustrations are created by artists, designers, and animators creating visuals to clarify and explain a life science concept, procedure, or mechanism.
What exactly does that mean?
Hand drawn illustrations have been used for hundreds of years to explain the natural world. Da Vinci sketched the human body to understand anatomy. Darwin sketched plants and animals to understand biology. The sketches created by da Vinci and Darwin aided these scientists in explaining their studies. Similarly, medical illustration is a specialized field to aid science. While drawing is still the foundation, medical illustrators may use diagrams, illustrations, animations, and interactive mediums. The type of medium used depends on the audience, subject matter, and client. The client may be a hospital, university, journal, government agency, medical-legal company, or a pharmaceutical company. The client’s needs will depend on who the viewing audience is. The audience may be the general public, students, healthcare practitioners, or consumers. With a background in science and art, a medical illustrator creates a solution to clarify the information presented.
